Joseph Petrovics as a child began sculpting the clay on the river banks of his Hungarian village, while his father, the local cobbler, taught him how to create and deftly use his own tools. Progressing through Hungary’s finest schools under its most accomplished artists, Joseph steadily rose through the ranks to become the equivalent of Sculptor Laureate on Hungary.

In 1987, lured by a need for artistic freedom, Joseph and his family came to the United States, eventually setting up his current studio in Blawenburg, New Jersey.  In his adopted country, Joseph Petrovics has created the 9/11 World Trade Center firefighters’ memorial, monumental pieces for St. John the Divine cathedral, well-known governmental commissions, as well as highly popular abstract pieces in wood, bronze, and stone.

When not instructing Americas young, up-and-coming elite, he labors in his studio, transforming his dreams and visions into the tangible.  Most recently, Joseph has moved toward more peaceful visions, including his most recent masterwork – a life size mare. Through the ages, from Phidias to Leonardo Da Vinci, sculptors have tried to capture the grand nobility of the horse, typically in warlike steeds, portraying the animal’s raw, bestial power.  Yet Petrovics brings his own individual and rare approach, sensitively creating a more serene and natural side of equine life.  Truly, here unique vision and immense talent have combined in a single, dedicated artist.
